Cook Islands Water Sports

The Cook Islands is more a beach holiday destination than it is a watersports hot spot, with snorkelling and kayaking that main water activity and equipment supplied free of charge by the majority of accommodations.

Muri Beach on Rarotonga is the only place with organised watersports activities although even here, motorised watersports are still a rarity ensuring a peaceful ambience. You can go on lagoon cruise along the coast to the best snorkelling reef and see giant clams, kayak out to one of the islets or hire a wind surf or kite-surf and enjoy the afternoon winds. There's also a sailing club where catamarans and hobies can be hired. The south coast has a good lagoon for kayaking, notably around Titikaveka and Aroa Beach. Game fishing charters and scuba diving operators are based at Avana Harbour (near Muri Beach) and in Avatiu (Avarua Town), and there are a few places where surfing is OK.

Organised water sports on Aitutaki are limited to kayaking and snorkelling in the lagoon, with some good snorkelling reefs accessible on day cruises. There's a scuba diving operator and game fishing charter as well as private charters and water taxis for island hopping as well as two companies offering day cruises every day except Sunday.
