Aquarius Rarotonga is a purpose built hotel across the road from the international airport and makes an affordable stopover or base to explore the island. Sandwiched between two oil terminals and set against a rocky coastline with a non-swimming lagoon, it is not the most picturesque location, but there are fabulous views of the reefs edge (just 20 metres from shore) where humpback whales can often be spotted between July and October. The funky staff, large flat screen TV and lively bar make this a good spot to spend the evenings and rooms are spacious, clean and air-conditioned.
